Yamkela Mandlevu

Yamkela Mandlevu

Cape Town-based visual artist Yamkela Mandlevu is a rising force in South Africa’s contemporary art scene, known for his emotive, monochromatic charcoal works. Beginning his artistic journey in 2022, Mandlevu quickly gained recognition with his debut at Open HeArt Gallery, followed by exhibitions at notable venues such as Youngblood Gallery and 16 on Lerotholi.

His expressive, light-and-shadow-driven pieces have marked him as a standout voice among a new generation of African artists. Mandlevu was selected for the City of Cape Town’s Emerging Artists Program during Fame Week Africa 2023 and participated in the Cape Town Arts Festival the same year. In 2024, he became the youngest artist ever to exhibit at the prestigious Investec Cape Town Art Fair—a milestone affirming his swift rise and distinctive vision.

About the Artwork
Mandlevu’s charcoal works explore identity, culture, and emotion through a raw, monochrome lens. Drawing from both rural and urban African life, his pieces celebrate resilience and humanity. Each portrait or scene invites reflection on the African experience, blending personal narrative with collective memory to evoke quiet power and dignity.
