Vuyo Mfokazi

Vuyo Mfokazi

Vuyo Mfokazi is a contemporary South African artist whose work offers an evocative exploration of the human condition, spontaneity, and the pursuit of personal freedom. Deeply rooted in African artistic traditions, his paintings draw inspiration from indigenous sculptures, masks, traditional patterns, and the unfiltered creativity of children’s art.

Working primarily in acrylic and oil pastel, Mfokazi builds dynamic, layered compositions that feature abstract human forms enriched with symbolic detail. His process is instinctive and improvisational—often beginning without a fixed concept—allowing the work to unfold organically.

Influenced by abstract expressionists such as Pollock, Miró, and Dubuffet, and aligned with the spirit of Art Brut, Mfokazi emphasizes emotional authenticity, intuition, and play in his practice. Each painting becomes a vibrant reflection of lived experience and inner dialogue.
