Sandile Cele

Born in 1982 in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, Sandile Cele is a respected South African ceramist whose work explores identity, culture, and the socio-political realities of contemporary life. A graduate of the Durban University of Technology (2005), where he specialized in ceramics, Cele combines technical mastery with rich cultural storytelling rooted in his Zulu heritage and lived experience. 

Cele has exhibited widely across South Africa and abroad, including notable showings at the National Arts Festival and Ceramics SA Regional Exhibition. His work, recognized for both craftsmanship and conceptual depth, has also featured in international art fairs and galleries. 

Beyond his studio, Cele has served as a part-time ceramics lecturer at DUT and actively participates in community arts programs, using clay as a medium for education and empowerment. 

About the Artwork
Cele’s figurative ceramic sculptures blend traditional forms with contemporary symbolism, often addressing migration, inequality, and resilience. Working with textured clay, glazes, and raw finishes, he creates human and hybrid forms that provoke reflection and emotional engagement. His work invites viewers to consider the complexities of identity, heritage, and transformation in modern South Africa.
