Mthobisi Maphumulo

Mthobisi Maphumulo (b. 1988, Imfume Mission, KwaZulu-Natal) is a prominent South African contemporary artist and curator whose influence spans creative practice and community empowerment. He is the founder of the Amasosha Art Movement, a collective of Durban-based artists dedicated to hard work, solidarity, and the exchange of ideas. 

He also established Rebirth Art Project Space, reflecting his commitment to creating platforms that support emerging talent and foster dialogue within the art world. Maphumulo's work is rooted in a deep interrogation of African identity and heritage, examining the socio-political constructions that shape the lives of people on the continent and in the diaspora. His practice actively honours African design traditions and their enduring influence on language, social status, and cultural expression.

About the Artwork
Working primarily in oil pastel, Maphumulo creates intricate compositions that feature stylized garments and richly patterned backgrounds.
