Born in 1977 in Jabulani, Soweto, John Vusi Mfuphi is a celebrated South African artist known for his vibrant upcycled collage works. Trained as a painter, Mfuphi graduated in 2000, but soon adapted his practice to collage due to limited space and access to traditional materials. Using magazines, burnt newspaper, pigments, and found objects, he developed a signature technique that transforms everyday materials into powerful visual narratives. Rooted in a spirit of innovation and necessity, Mfuphi’s work reflects both personal experience and broader social commentary. 

His art celebrates youth and movement while addressing pressing issues such as teenage pregnancy, drugs, HIV/AIDS, and identity. His commitment to community engagement is evident in his collaborations with schools, public mural projects, and international initiatives promoting art education and youth empowerment.
