Japhter Luvhimbi

Born in 1982 in Mudelane, Limpopo, Japhter Musshe Luvhimbi is a South African sculptor and wooden jewellery designer whose practice is rooted in tradition and family lineage. Inspired by his father, also a sculptor, Luvhimbi began carving in 2002, learning directly from the source. His work reflects the rich woodcarving traditions of the Vhembe district, blending inherited techniques with a contemporary design sensibility. 

His dedication has earned him recognition, including 3rd place in the 2011 Vhembe district youth business competition. His sculptures have been collected by notable institutions such as the Wits University Art Gallery, Madia Thavha, and the University of Venda. 

About the Artwork
Luvhimbi works primarily in wood, crafting sculptures and intricately carved jewellery that draw on Limpopo’s natural forms and cultural narratives. His jewellery extends his sculptural language into wearable art, featured on fashion runways and worn by South African celebrities, including cast members from Muvhango. Each piece—whether sculptural or wearable—embodies a deep connection to land, legacy, and craftsmanship. From his studio in Limpopo, Luvhimbi continues to breathe life into wood, bridging past and present through his innovative, culturally resonant designs.
