Gilbert Maepa

Gilbert Maepa is a South African visual artist and arts educator whose work explores Black intellectualism within the urban African experience. Born in Jane, Limpopo, and raised in the Free State, Maepa's personal history informs a rich and reflective practice. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art and Higher Education from Vaal University of Technology and currently practices and teaches at the Fezile Dabi Art Centre, where he contributes to both artistic creation and education. 

His commitment to social realism stems from lived experience and academic inquiry, allowing him to engage deeply with histories and intellectual voices often excluded from dominant cultural narratives. Through his art and teaching, Maepa emphasizes the power of visual storytelling to inspire reflection and transformation. 

About the Artwork
Maepa’s work uses social realism to examine themes of migration, time, memory, and the ongoing effects of coloniality. Drawing from personal encounters and overlooked Black intellectual thought, his paintings are visual essays that confront adversity and celebrate resilience. Through carefully rendered scenes and layered meanings, he invites viewers to consider African identity, community, and the persistence of hope within changing urban realities.
